Are you sick of throwing the same old tennis ball, wishing there were some other way you could bond with your dog? This list is here to help. We’ve rounded up 15 activities for you and your four-legged bestie to do together. Included are a wide range of movement levels, so every duo has something new to do.
1. Bark at the Park – Many baseball teams have “Bark at the Park” days or something similar. Pet parents can take their pups out to a ballgame with dog-themed events. These can feature a dog-walk around the bases, doggie parades, dog-specific play areas in the ballpark, and more. It’s a home run for pet parents!
2. Beach Day – The beach offers a wide array of activities for you and your pup. From swimming, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding to running and digging in the sand, all doggies have something to do at the beach. Even if you don’t live near the ocean, dogs will have a great time at a river or lake too. You and your bestie can spend all day enjoying some fun in the sun with your feet (or paws) in the water!
3. Camping – Exploring the great outdoors with your doggie is an amazing way to connect with them and stay active. Many campsites are super dog friendly. Between scenic walks, swimming, and picnicking outdoors, there’s loads of fun to be had for everyone. Gear like collapsible food and water bowls, paw protectors, and dog carrier backpacks can help you prepare for taking your pup camping. Make sure they’re up to date on vaccinations and flea and tick treatment!
4. Canicross – Putting a unique spin on running with your dog, canicross is a sport where cross-country runners are attached to their dogs with bungee leashes. The bungee harness acts as a shock absorber as your pup pulls you. It started as a way to train sled dogs in the off-season, but now it’s become a fun, fast-paced sport of its own! All dogs can participate, but the breeds that get the most out of it are built for sporting, like Eurohounds and Belgian Malinois.
5. Charity Walk – Many different organizations put on charity dog-walks, both in-person and virtually. Participating in a charity walk is a terrific way for you to make a difference and switch up your regular dog-walking routine. Plus, it’s a great way to socialize your pup with lots of people and other dogs at one time. Common causes for fundraisers include animal welfare, research, and humane societies.
6. Movie Night – Although your dog probably won’t get what’s going on in a movie, it’s a great excuse to hang out at home with them. You can put on a dog-themed movie or show and brush them, clip their nails, and even make some dog treats, (and human ones, too). Simply spending some intentional time with your pup will increase your connection.
7. Share a Meal – Why dine solo when your bestie can come along? There are quite a few coffee shops, bars, breweries, and restaurants that have dog-friendly patio spaces. Some places are even dog-themed! Bringing your dog out to eat is a fun treat for them and allows you to spend more time together. Some places even have a special dog menu, so they get to try something new, too!
8. Agility Training – Boosting your dog’s physical and mental strength, agility courses keep doggies engaged. Both you and your pup can get some energy out by spending some time at an agility course. With your direction, doggies get to go through tunnels, go over jumps, and complete many other obstacles. You could even make a course at home!
9. Pet Expo – Pet-themed events are always a blast. Pet expos usually have events like petting zoos, pet adoptions, performances, vet services, and more. You and your dog can see new things and spend some quality time on a day that’s all about them!
10. Dog Park – Of course, the dog park is always a fun place for your doggie to play. There, dogs can make furry friends, run freely, and get their wiggles out. The dog park is also a great place to practice your commands in a more natural setting. Bring a ball and watch your buddy go!
11. Shopping – Dreading your errands? Bring your four-legged bestie to brighten the mood. Stores like Harbor Freight, Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela’s allow your pup to come in with you. Tractor Supply even has a self-serve pet wash station. Most stores that allow dogs require them to be leashed and on their best behavior. Check store policies and your local and state laws to make sure you can bring your doggie inside the store with you.
12. Kayaking – If you’re a confident kayaker who’s sick of solo trips, you’re in luck. With thorough training, your dog can become your new kayak passenger! The American Kennel Club has an expert-backed article with awesome advice. For example, sit-on kayaks give your pup more room to lay down than a sit-in kayak would.
13. Hiking – A simple way to spruce up your regular walks is to do them on a hiking trail! The exercise is great, and all the new sights, sounds, and smells help to stimulate your dog’s mind. When you bring your dog into nature, remember the National Park Service’s B.A.R.K. principles:
Bag your pet’s waste.
Always leash your pet.
Respect wildlife.
Know where you can go.
14. Yoga – Yoga with your pet is not only a good exercise, but it gives you the chance to bond, work on commands, and socialize with other people and dogs. Pups can be trained to do basic stretches, and you can even include smaller ones by lifting them for a weighted pose. If you’re nervous about joining a group, practice at home first! Some studios also host pet yoga as a way to connect with adoptable dogs.
15. Hide and Seek – In the dog version of hide and seek, you’re always the hider. Tell your pup to stay, and then find a spot that’s easy enough for them to find you in. Once you’re hidden, use a release command to have them come find you! Some pet parents like to hide treats and help their dog find them instead. When you first play the game, make it easy to boost their confidence. As they get better at it, you can up the difficulty to make it a challenge for your furry friend!
Every moment with your pup is a chance to make memories. You and your bestie deserve to have some new, exciting fun together. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and unleash the fun!
